"Chill steals into the rooms like the sleeping breath of dragons. She listens for the sounds of arrival on courtyard stones, but there is only silence and sometimes, the whistle of wind over old volcanic rocks. She feels her heartbeat in the tips of her fingers, wishes for flowers. Battles the blue light with electric chandeliers. In the space between sleep and wakefulness, the house exhales with her in companionable melancholy".
